Skepticism at its worst
I got a call today from a reporter regarding my letter to editors about effective drug education curriculums missing from America’s schools.
Having been uninformed, she wondered why I would send out something to media pulications asking for more money to keep our kids off drugs. I reiterated that we’re spending more money on research than actual prevention programs. She then asked me why I would send something out asking for more money in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and if I thought my issue was more important than that. I of course said that when there is a national tragedy then that is what needs the attention, but it doesn’t mean we should forget
How could someone take a simple proactive statement that criticized federal spending and try and spin it against us? I hope the message that got through was that we do care, we do help, and that it’s not okay for people to suffer when there are effective solutions available to help individuals and communities.
