Meth makers targets the younger crowd with designer drugs
Change the color, mask the taste and designer meth appeals to a hip, younger crowd. It’s the latest trend in marketing a dangerous drug to a new generation.
There’s no sugar coating. It’s a startling new trend in peddling methamphetamines. Dealers are targeting your children by flavoring the deadly concoction.
“They say it has a bitter taste so mixing it with a flavoring will help mask that bitter taste,” says Drug Enforecent Officer Ricky Phillips.
Police say meth makers are using everything from powered candies to powered drinks to sweeten the deal for young users.
It’s often called Strawberry Quick and officers first took notice of it in Nevada. Since then, it’s shown up in Arkansas, Missouri, and a handful of other states.
The mixture was confiscated
Police in Arkansas recently found packets of strawberry-flavored drink mix mixed in with the remnants of a meth lab in Little Rock.
Drug authorities say meth makers are constantly remaking the drug to keep their customer base growing.
School drug counselors worry how long kids can resist the newest temptation.
“It’s always alarming at the age that students do begin using drugs,” says Drug Counselor Malinda Hamilton.
Especially when those drugs are candy coated.
Just last month, two US Senators introduced legislation increasing penalties for drug dealers who entice children with candy-flavored meth and other flavored drugs.
