Addiction Treatment Admissions Trends

A new report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) showed that addiction treatment admissions for methamphetamine and prescription painkillers increased substantially from 2002 to 2003.

Primary methamphetamine treatment admissions rose ten percent from 105,000 to more than 116,000. Narcotic pain medication treatment admissions rose twelve percent from 43,000 to over 48,000.

This should come as no surprise given the scourge of meth abuse throughout the nation over the last decade, and the recent study contucted

by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) out of Columbia University showing that 15.1 million Americans have abused prescription drugs in the past month.

It’s pretty frustrating that it takes epidemics for out nation to focus on particular drugs of abuse.
